THEY HAD IT COMING - CELL BLOCK TANGO
Dear Family and Friends, you might have heard that I am applying to the ZHdK (Zürcher Hochschule der Künste) for the BA Film next year. The application process involves making a short film (max. 3min) to the topic «Der Anfang vom Ende» (Eng: the beginning of the end).
I have come up with an intricate concept which involves quite a few people as well as hiring event locations and equipment. I myself am not a fan of unpaid work, therefor I would like to be able to offer my crew and cast a little something as a thank you for their participation.
My idea is to make a three minute version of the piece «The Cell Block Tango» from the musical Chicago.
I quite liked the motive «Why I killed my husband and sister» in relation to topic «The Beginning of the End». It will be a great addition to my work as I have never made a musical film before. Growing up in a musicians family with all sorts of musical and dance influences, I would love to show this as a major part of who I am and what kind of films I would like to make in the future.
Instead of having a “Stage - Audience” structure, I would like to open it up and make it more “3D”. The setting will be in a concert/theatre hall and the lead Velma will be surrounded by burlesque dancing singers, professional tango dancers and live musicians. If you’ve seen the scene «El Tango de Roxanne» in «Moulin Rouge» you might know what I mean.
In addition to the “performance” part of the film, we will bring the story she tells into colour. This scene will be filmed in a hotel with a luxurious view over Zurich. The hotel we have in mind is very film friendly and is willing to cooperate.
We will most likely have a music coach, a choreographer, a professional camera assistant and maybe even a makeup artist. On top of all these amazing people, I am looking for an affordable hall which gives the whole scenery an impressive touch. We may even have access to lighting and technology from the Opera House Zurich.
As it is very rare to get financial support from any foundations I will have to take the matter into my own hands, and my intern salary doesn’t really allow any big contributions.
For that reason I now appeal to you dear beloved:
I don't want a lot for Christmas
There is just one thing I need
And I don't care about the presents
Underneath the Christmas tree
I just want you for my own
More than you could ever know
Make my wish come true
All I want for Christmas
Is … 1000.- CHF
That is of course my goal. That amount would be enough to pay my 4 musicians and 6 Singers a small amount, it will finance my two professional tango dancers, it can cover a part of the location rent as well as the equipment. That amount alone won’t be enough but it’s all I need to make it work.
The main point is, every little helps...
And I am so very grateful for any contribution to making this exciting project work. I will most definitely find a way of showing you my appreciation.
